Acclaimed drummer, composer and teacher Barbara Borden joins colleague Larissa Montfort to share Djembe & Chants and Dundun Dance lessons!

No experience necessary! Drums provided  – bring your enthusiasm!

This workshop features two drumming disciplines:

West African Djembe & Chants
Yes, it is possible and a whole lot of fun to drum and chant at the same time! You will learn African chants and accompanying drumbeats on your djembe. Beware…the vibrations from your voice and drum may cause you to enter a blissful state!

Dundun Dance
Drum while you dance, dance while you drum! Dundun dance is an artform from the Baga women of northern Guinea. Build your coordination and technique as you learn several stick patterns and dance simple moves around the drums.

About the presenters:

Larissa Montfort has been exploring her passion for West African, Congolese, and Afro-Cuban rhythms since 1995 with many teachers. She has traveled to Guinea, West Africa several times to study dance and drum. Larissa teaches and performs West African inspired drumming and dundun dance. In her own words Larissa shares: “Drumming allows me to express my joy, strength, and freedom, while serving the spirit of the
music, the dance, and the empowerment of women. ”

Barbara Borden—drummer, percussionist, teacher—performs solo and in collaboration with other musicians, artists & healers. Barbara has been playing drums for 60 years and teaching private lessons and drumming groups for 30 years. “I love to drum! Drumming brings me great joy and meaning that I can pass on to others. Equally as satisfying is to share knowledge and techniques I have learned to help them achieve their musical goals.” Borden is the subject of David L. Brown’s documentary, Keeper of the Beat and dedicates her life to keeping the heartbeat of joy, compassion, understanding, and creativity alive.
