GRASSOMOXOA 420 SHOW AT OCA!

Don’t miss this awesome 420 show at OCA! Grassomoxoa performs bluegrass music of the Grateful Dead and more. Featuring Scotty Brown, Riley Hill, Isaac Cantor and Bud Dillard - this will be one dance party you don’t want to miss!

The fine art of bluegrass and the music of the Grateful Dead have been linked before the Dead even existed. Any fan knows that bluegrass was the foundation of Jerry Garcia’s lifelong commitment to his craft. He would later revisit it in 1973 with the short-lived, yet very influential project, Old and in the Way. It finally came back around in the early 90’s when Garcia/Grisman was formed. Even when bluegrass wasn’t at the forefront for Jerry, it was always a factor just beneath the surface.

Grassomoxoa (a clever nod to the 1969 GD album, Aoxomoxoa) is comprised of four men who are extremely passionate about bluegrass and the Grateful Dead. The idea of merging these two entities is nothing new. However, the way in which they approach it instills the songs with a fresh and vibrant energy. Riley Hill (guitar), Bud Dillard (mandolin), Isaac Cantor (banjo) and Scotty Brown (bass) are old friends who embody the sort of freewheeling spirit that Jerry himself held dear.

You’ve seen them in their other bands, including: Grateful Bluegrass Boys, Dusty Green Bones, One Grass Two Grass and Electric Tumbleweed. Here we’ll see them delve deeper than ever before into the far corners of the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia songbook. You can count on a magical combination of both traditional string music and progressive jam explorations. It will be just like a late-night picking session around the fire.

Art Gallery: Imaginative Eye - A Special Exhibit of Theatrical Puppets

Imaginative Eye

A Special Exhibit of Theatrical Puppets

For over fifty years, Elizabeth Fuller and Conrad Bishop have presented stage performances of Shakespeare and other plays performed by their unique, nearly life-sized puppets. They have generously donated part of their puppet collection to OCA. The puppets will be displayed and sold in the gallery and lobby throughout the month of May, with a gala reception on May 18th from 1-3 pm, at which Conrad and Elizabeth will talk about making the puppets and demonstrate performing with them.

Conrad and Elizabeth met and mated as undergraduates in 1960 and have spent their lives as co-creators—professionally since 1971. “We write jointly and both perform. He’s the director, designer and puppet sculptor; she’s the composer, techie, accountant and cook” says Conrad.

“We’ve lived in Chicago, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Palo Alto, Columbia SC, and Lancaster PA, and we’ve performed on tour in 35 states plus Canada and Jerusalem. We’ve created more than 60 plays for our own ensemble as well as about three dozen other theatres, plus public radio series, puppetry, and videos. We have two grown kids, one in San Francisco, one in Italy—our closest friends.  Most of our creative lives have been devoted to exploring how people working collaboratively can make fine things.

The whole story, or a goodly portion of it, is in our memoir, Co-Creation: Fifty Years in the Making.”

Children of Lucy - World Jazz Fusion

Children of Lucy is an Afro/Asian/Latin dance-rock-jazz band, performing original danceable music and arrangements from around the world - plus some western standards. Led by Andy Lewis aka "DrClock" this ensemble features talented musicians from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds. Check out their bios below!

Tickets to this show are $20 GA, $15 for OCA members. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Beer, wine and refreshments for sale. OCA is wheelchair accessible.

From a review in “LA Jazz Scene”:

"It was both tightly composed and left room for improvisations. The harmonies and blend were quite colorful, covering a variety of moods, and always held one’s interest….so memorable that I wish I could view the performance again. Be sure to catch this very original ensemble whenever you have the chance."

A C Lewis, AKA DrClock, has been a musician, composer, freelancer, teacher, and student of music for 56 years now. Starting as a Trombonist, he switched to Congas in High School, started drumset in College, and classical percussion at the S F Conservatory of Music, where he earned a Bachelors degree, He also has a Masters from the Juilliard school, a Post Grad diploma from the Mannes College of Music, a teaching certificate from the Lewis-Clark State University in Idaho, 2 Masters in Conducting from the Universidad Juan Corpas in Bogota Colombia and SF State U. He has performed worldwide with ensembles including the Mexico City Phil, the Orquesta Nacional de Colombia, the New Zealand Symphony, and 20 years with the San Francisco Symphony. He has performed with countless luminaries including Ritchie Havens, Ray Charles, and Ella Fitzgerald, Leonard Bernstein, Frank Zappa, Michael Tilson Thomas, Steve Reich, YoYo Ma, Bobby McFerrin, Joan Jett, Isaac Stern, Aaron Copland, Pierre Boulez, Jeffery Kahane, and Kent Nagano, among other. He’s shared the stage with Moby Grape and members of the Grateful Dead, and studied Composition with John Adams at the SF Conservatory. He “made it there” in N Y, as freelancer on Broadway and countless ensembles, but is happily settled now in our fair Bay Area. As bandleader he toured Colombia with the A C Lewis Trio, in 2005 created and is still occasionally performing with the poymetric octet Deep Hip Pocket, and is now steering Children of Lucy, and maintains his position as Timpanist with the Santa Rosa Symphony.

Alex Holloway is a bassist living in the East Bay area. He studied bass with Doctor Aaron Miller at Brigham Young University - Idaho and has many years of touring nationally on both electric and upright bass under his belt. He has also recorded with a wide variety of artists and is featured on award winning international releases. He is passionate about making music and considers his job well done if your toes are tapping along with the groove.

David El covers a lot of ground. As a vocalist he is an adept rapper and a sensitive enough singer to croon a ballad, as a guitarist rip a rocking guitar solo and articulate jazzy harmonic sophistication all the while playing smart rhythmic accompaniments. A familiar yet renewed sound that blends elements of jazz and blues tonality into a latin rock, hip hop vibe. David Has been making waves in the Bay Area Music scene both as a side man and his trio : David El 3-oh!

Eric Scheide is a saxophonist, band leader and composer. He studied saxophone performance at San Francisco State University. He has performed with Einsteinium Quartet, SF Civic Symphony, City Swing Big Band, Gina Maadrid, Detour, SF L/G Freedom Band, Ray of Light Theater, Jazz Beaus, What's Cookin' Quintet, David Mcfarland Project, The Soul Miners, Left Coast Project and many others, including performing with and recording DrClock’s previous band Deep Hip Pocket.

Miles Lassi, an interdisciplinary artist based in Oakland, CA, has performed in over 150 cities, with ensembles like  the Vietnam National Symphony, and the national tour of Dirty Dancing. He has performed with remarkable artists including Bely Fleck, Tangerine dream, John Rutter, Monophonics, Morton Subotnik, and the Santa Rosa Symphony. He has created music with Tony award producer Peter Schneider, and Grammy award winning producers Om’Mas Keith and Jack Vad, who won a Grammy with DrClock for their roles in the San Francisco Symphony’s Grammy award winning “Carmina Burana” under the direction of Herbert Bloomstedt. He currently works musically for KQED in their terrific series “Snap Judgement”.

Jonah Cabral is a sought-after Bay Area saxophone soloist from San Francisco. He has shared the stage with Carl Allen, Smith Dobson Jr, Nicholas Beard, Akira Tana, John Daversa, Andreas van Zoelen, Paul Cohen and many more, and has played throughout the world, in South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Slovakia and throughout the United States. He  earned a Bachelor of Music from San Jose State University and a Masters from Fontys Conservatory in the Netherlands. His awards include being one of winners in La Jolla Symphony's 2019 Young Artist Competition, a finalist in Fremont Symphony's 2019  Young Artist Competition, Delta Symphony's 2019 Young Artist Competition and in the Northern American Saxophone Alliance 2018 National Competition. Jonah released his first album as a leader in 2022 recorded live at the Paradox jazz club in the Netherlands. West County Fiddle Workshop

West County Fiddle Workshop
(every 3rd Tuesday from 7-9 PM)

  • In this 2-hour workshop, we'll dive into a new fiddle tune every month. American traditional fiddle music is vast, with deep Celtic roots and a fascinating multi-cultural history that gave birth to old-time music, and later to bluegrass. Each month, we'll work on a new tune from one of these three genres. After learning the basic melody, we'll explore the nuances that make each tune & style come alive.

    • All stringed instruments and levels are welcome, but students should be comfortable enough on their instruments that they can learn bite-sized phrases of a melody by ear.

  • David Pascoe is a singer and multi-instrumentalist based in Occidental, CA. In addition to being a passionate music educator and the co-founder of Every Folk (a 3-day camp for adults to explore traditional music and culture), he performs with multiple groups up and down the West Coast on fiddle, mandolin, and guitar. He lives for the moment when music comes alive in the people around him.

Workshop fee is $25, $20 for OCA members.

Singing since the age of eight, Stella feels wholly blessed to be able to express herself through music and song, and to carry forth the torch of Jazz Music that she loves so dearly. She grew up in the North San Francisco Bay Area, steeped in her mother’s eclectic music collection; some of her early musical influences were Louis Armstrong, Edith Piaf, Buena Vista Social Club, Billie Holiday, Tom Waits, Bod Dylan and Ella Fitzgerald. Her education was primarily in Acting at Interlochen Arts Academy and Syracuse University, where she received a degree in classical acting and cultural geography. She spent many years as a Shakespearian actress based out of New York City, where she began to sing Jazz again with the incredible Marjorie Eliot in Harlem.

She moved to her home state of California in 2014, and began playing music full time, starting the Bay Area based band Bandjango Collectif, a wild around the edges band that mixes French Jazz Manouche, New Orleans Hot Swing, and Eclectic Global Folk, allowing Stella to explore and play in vocal improvisation, different languages, and song interpretation. In 2019 she debuted The Billie Holiday Project, a historically centered musical tribute to the great Lady Day. The show was met with great success and quickly moved into some of the Bay Area's most reputable listening venues. The pandemic brought fruitful new musical connections and collaborations with musicians such as Marcus Shelby, Gunhild Carling, and Ben Levin in Cincinnati. Stella has a passion for uncovering old gems from the library and music archives. She has a deep love for Jazz and its history, and believes it should be an integral part of American childhood curriculum. Stella took on the role of Education Coordinator for Healdsburg Jazz in 2023. She is also a new mother of twins!

Fula Brothers

Fula Brothers are a burst of unbridled creative musicianship and happy-making. This is a high spirited cross-cultural meeting of veteran performers from West Africa and America. Together, they weave West African hunters harp, fingerstyle guitar, drums, vocals, and a bounty of improvisation into an ecstatic groove-based dialogue which the heart - and the feet - cannot resist.

Master kamale ngoni player Mamadou Sidibe is a storied and award-winning West African musician, and a contagious joy. Thirty years ago in Mali, he was the first to break with tradition and take the ancient hunters harp outside the hunters' ceremonies, creating the now widely popular kamale ngoni. He frequently collaborates with West African superstar Oumou Sangare, with whom he recently wrote and recorded the internationally acclaimed CD “Timbuktu”. Mamadou has performed throughout Europe and the US with Malian stars like Coumba Sidibe and Toumani Diabate, and has recently recorded with American producer Rick Rubin.

Guitarist Walter Strauss' playing is held in high regard in varied corners of the musical world. The great Malian kora player Toumani Diabate calls Walter’s guitar renditions of kora music “inspirational”. British guitar icon Martin Simpson says his playing is “beautiful, fluid, and sophisticated”. His guitar is a rich blend of texture and syncopation, influenced by diverse global stringed instruments, both contemporary and ancient. Walter has collaborated in the US with Grammy-winning Malian kora player Mamadou Diabate, in Havana with violinist Tanmy Lopez Moreno and in Scotland with Old Blind Dogs fiddler Jonny Hardie.

Fula Brothers are elevated by the nimble grooves of ace drummer / percussionist Brian Rice - a veteran of multiple styles, known especially for his work in Brazilian and Cuban music. He has been percussionist for numerous touring Brazilian artists, soloist for Felipe Senna’s concerto for pandeiro and orchestra, and percussionist for the Bay Area’s own Wake the Dead. Brian has performed internationally, and at US venues like Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, and NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts.

Brazilian Jazz with Natalie Cressman and Ian Faquini

An evening of Brazilian Jazz Fusion with Natalie Cressman and Ian Faquini

Trombonist and singer/songwriter Natalie Cressman and Brazilian composer, guitarist, and singer Ian Faquini have created a uniquely intimate duo collaboration, drawing from impressionism, jazz, and the great Brazilian songwriting tradition. The duo’s global take on music is largely expressed through the distinct compositional voice of Faquini, with occasional lyrics penned by Cressman. Their original material features songs in three different languages and encompasses a vast spectrum of musical ground. With the warm instrumentation of acoustic guitar and trombone and two-part vocal harmonies hugging the Brazilian-accented Portuguese, Cressman & Faquini weave their musical voices together to create a fully orchestrated sound befitting a much larger ensemble. Together Cressman and Faquini performed in the US at venues including the Monterey Jazz Festival, SFJAZZ Center, and and in Brazil, Portugal, Spain, and Italy.

Tickets are $25 GA, $20 for OCA members. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Beer, wine and refreshments for sale. OCA is wheelchair accessible. Art gallery open during intermission.

Cressman has spent the past eleven years touring the jam band circuit as a horn player and vocalist with Phish's Trey Anastasio, while also collaborating with many illustrious figures on the New York City jazz scene. When she’s not performing her own music, Cressman can be found collaborating with some of the most illustrious figures in rock, funk, jazz and beyond, which have included Phish, Big Gigantic, Carlos Santana, Escort, Wycliffe Gordon, Nicholas Payton, Anat Cohen, The Motet, and Umphrey's McGee.

Born in Brasília and raised in Berkeley, Faquini was a member of the renowned Berkeley High School Jazz program before going on to study at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley and, immediately after graduating, joined the faculty there. He has performed throughout Europe, Japan, Brazil and the United States and has shared the stage and recording studio with such names as Guinga, Brad Mehldau, Chris Potter, Spok, Lee Konitz, Fleurine, among many others.

DGIIN

Sonoma County’s favorite french gypsy band returns for a fun night of dancing and revelry.

Dgiin is a melting-pot of French, American, Quebec Artists with various influences. Français, Américains, Quebecois. They all reunite around a repertoire of music in French with a healthy dash of Spanish guitar, an inch of brass, a violin, bass, and percussion all tied together with sibling vocals.

Born of smokeless flame, a dginn is an ancient shapeshifting interdimensional being, unbound by the laws of physics as we know them. Many cultures have tales of dginn, certainly, all have heard of genie, tragically bound to do the bidding of humans.

Dgiin the band, cannot be put in a box (or a lamp) with a specific genre, but you are sure to be on your feet and dancing in no time!

The Story Wrens

The Story Wrens

Celebrate St Patrick's Day with a fun evening of Celtic-flavored melodies and enchanting stories of The Story Wrens! With their poetic lyrics and captivating sound, The Story Wrens promise to transport you to a world of Renaissance-inspired music where every note tells a tale.

Tickets are $20 GA, $15 for OCA members. Doors open at 6:30 PM, fine refreshments for sale.

The Story Wrens were formed approximately 2008 by performers at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Sothern California who met at the St. Helena’s Guild, home to more than a few pagans, vegans and libertines, and a hotbed of traditional arts and lore.

“Let us form a pact”, said one, pulling hands in a circle after a particularly good trad singing set, “that next season, we will be a band”, and so it was, with the band passing the audition by making the Entertainment Director cry… in a good way.

While research and authenticity may have been the lay of the cultural landscape, the environment of the annual 6-week festival also pushed performers to create unique live entertainment, with fellow groups like the Merry Wives of Windsor and the Poxy Boggards not only singing gorgeously and powerfully, but also helping to create the concept of NC-17 stages and ushering in their Golden Age. The Wrens, as one of the smallest, most instrumental and most unabashedly artsy of these groups, had their struggles in the 80-decibel soundscape (no amps), the routine 90-degree heat, and the thousand competing distractions of a huge festival, but ultimately honed the mix of music, theater, and history they present today.

A few years later, the trad St. Helena’s guild was terminated, in part due to the aforementioned pagans, vegans and libertines – well, not so much the vegans – but the Wrens remained, and branched out with other engagements like the Lifetime channel series, American Princess, and the Hollywood premiere for the Netflix series, The Witcher. More changes came with the pandemic but, remarkably, the Wrens re-formed as a Northern California band, re-affirming their out-of-their-minds love of trad music and festival performing, and drawing even closer.

The Wrens bring a diversity of performing backgrounds:

  • Orchestral cello and 1000+ stage play performances (Mark, mandolin & fiddle)

  • Musical theater and Nashville (Vickie, lead singer)

  • Champion trad harping (Shawna, with the Chieftains, Joan Baez, and all-Ireland)

  • R&B and Delta Blues (Forrest, percussion, he of 9 Grammy nominations and the Jazz Crusaders)

  • Playing Rachmaninov for fun (Megan, 12-string guitar)

With their second award-winning album, The Sailor and the Mermaid, the Wrens came to fully understand their focus on Story Songs. With an emphasis on storytelling, tight harmonies and instrumental drive, they work/play to curate the beautiful trad songs, updating them for a modern audience, and creating connections through time.

Book Launch: Judith Day “Going Where They Belong”

“Going Where They Belong” Book Launch for local author Judith Day

Sunday, March 10th 3-4:30PM Free event

Nota Bene - Daylight Savings time change starts today!!

Free admission, all donations gratefully accepted. Selected readings, Q&A, book sales and signing. Refreshments/wine and beer/ coffee and tea for sale.

Going Where They Belong is a collection of nine stories that voice the peculiarities and perceptions of ordinary, sometimes eccentric, people.

Most of the characters are plagued with inner instability and social marginality; all of them discover in themselves and others a caring humanity. By turns troubling, poignant, and whimsical, showing lives stricken by grief, turbulence, longing, and unfulfilled hopes, the book is ultimately uplifting and provides original, engaging storytelling.

"...these stories inhabit you with their specific and wonderful detail, their wit, their compassion.”

—Linda Saldaña, review in Eclectica

In praise of Glowing in the Dark, Stories of Wounded Healers:

“Judith writes with skill, artistry and honesty, unfolding these complex, creative and sometimes troubling stories of humanity with lessons for all.” -Jack Kornfield, author of A Path With Heart

"Her characters, like the author herself, are unflinching in their pursuit of truth and beauty, love and meaning. …Like Mahakala, the bodhisattva of compassion, Judith wields a sharp blade."
-Daniel Coshnear, author of Separation Anxiety

Judith Day is the author of Glowing in the Dark, Stories of Wounded Healers. She has been a cook and a cab driver and has graduate degrees in history and psychology. Since 1990 she has worked in private practice as a psychotherapist. She has also worked in emergency psychiatric response, inpatient psychiatric settings, residential treatment, low-fee mental health clinics, and as a military family life consultant. She has taught mindfulness meditation since 1993. Married for forty years, Judith lives with her husband near the ocean in northern California.

Patrick Ball: Come Dance with me in Ireland: A Pilgrimage to Yeats Country

Patrick Ball presents “Come Dance With Me In Ireland: A Pilgrimage to Yeats Country - a celtic harp and dramatic performance based on the life and works of Ireland’s greatest poet, William Butler Yeats.

OCA is thrilled to welcome back Patrick Ball - Don't miss your chance to see this show! Tickets are $35 GA, $28 for OCA members. Doors open at 6:30 PM, beer/wine/refreshments available. OCA is wheelchair accessible. Art gallery open during intermission.

Online sales have ended. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Patrick Ball is one of the premier Celtic harp players in the world and a captivating spoken word artist. In playing the ancient, legendary brass-strung harp of Ireland with its crystalline, bell-like voice, and in performing marvelous tales of wit and enchantment, he not only brings new life to two cherished traditions, but blends them in concert to create “a richly theatrical and hauntingly beautiful performance.

“Come Dance With Me In Ireland: A Pilgrimage to Yeats Country” - is a celtic harp and dramatic performance based on the life and works of Ireland’s greatest poet, William Butler Yeats. is the story of an elderly Irish couple who had emigrated to America early in their married life. The husband had always loved Yeats’ poetry and knew much of it by heart. But, now he is suffering severe memory loss, and even those beloved poems are leaving him. The wife has arranged for them to return to Ireland and go on a “Yeats Country” tour in hopes of recapturing, if only briefly, some of those swiftly fading memories. They visit the magical landscape of Inishfree, Thoor Ballylee, Glencar, Knocknarea, and Drumcliffe. They hear again some of Yeats’ most beautiful poems, The Lake Isle Of Innisfree, When You Are Old, The Song Of Wandering Aengus, The Host Of The Air, The Wild Swans At Coole…and their story unfolds.

A note on the performance…

In the spring of 2016 and 2018, Patrick Ball and Peter Glazer were awarded Visiting Fellowships by the Moore Institute at the National University of Ireland, Galway to study the life and works of Ireland’s greatest poet, William Butler Yeats. Peter spent a commendable amount of time in the Archives and Special Collections: Patrick spent a bit more time in the pubs of Galway and Clare. But, they both spent most of their time rambling around Yeats Country and like to think that this performance has the savor of all these influences.

About Patrick Ball

Patrick Ball was born and raised in California and gave little thought to such things as where his ancestors came from. He went to school and supposed, when he thought about it at all, that he would one day be a lawyer like his father. But he studied music from time to time and over the years developed a nodding acquaintance with the piano and the guitar. At university he continued his flirtatious relationship with music by playing the tin whistle, principally to annoy his roommate. But at this time he found that he was irresistibly drawn to words, to the music of words, to writers who made words sing, to writers from Ireland. When he began to study history to fulfill his academic requirements, he was not surprised to find that it was the lyrical, turbulent history of Ireland that engaged him. So much so, in fact, that when his father died, all his thoughts of law school died with him. He enrolled in graduate school and soon made his way to Ireland. There he fell in love with the eloquence and fire of the Irish oral tradition. There he fell in love with the Celtic harp. And there a few pieces of his life fell into place. For he came to know that marvelous unity of Irish words, music and history that would become his passion and, eventually, his livelihood.

Patrick returned to California, was awarded a Master’s Degree in History by Dominican College, and soon discovered that jobs in the field of Irish scholarship were not to be had for love nor money. After laboring in various unrewarding lines of work he set off hitchhiking around the country and finally fetched up at Penland School of Crafts in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where he lived for two years and worked as a groundsman. There he encountered a branch of that living oral tradition that had captivated him in Ireland. And there for him, among the Appalachian storytellers, his love of the spoken word was rekindled. He returned to Ireland for a time, then made his way back to California, determined to put his scholarship, his love of words and his neglected musicianship to some use, to carve out for himself an occupation from the things that he loved. He sought out a maker of the rare wire-strung Celtic harp and taught himself to play. He then gathered the stories he had heard and the history he had learned and blended them with the music that had so often been their companion.

Patrick now lives in County Clare, Ireland with his wife and dogs. He continues to tour extensively throughout the United States, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Canada. He is considered one of the premier Celtic harpers and storytellers in the world today. He has recorded nine instrumental and five spoken word albums which have sold well over one-half million copies collectively and earned national awards in both the music and spoken word categories. Along with Celtic Harp and Story, his beguiling blend of music and spoken word concerts, Patrick has also written and currently performs three solo musical theater pieces: O’Carolan’s Farewell to Music, The Fine Beauty of the Island and Come Dance with Me in Ireland: A Pilgrimage to Yeats County.

Relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1981 he continued to freelance and eventually teamed up with the legendary singer and pianist Charles Brown.

Danny served as guitarist and musical director for Charles Brown from 1987 until Brown’s death in 1999. He has played on numerous CD’s and sessions with Charles Brown, Clifton Chenier, Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker, Van Morrison, Ruth Brown, Etta Jones, John Clayton, Teddy Edwards, Gerald Wilson, Donald Fagen, Dr. John, Little Milton Campbell, John Hammond Jr. and many others. Danny is the featured guitarist on the Van Morrison produced John Lee Hooker album, “Don’t Look Back” which won two Grammy Awards – one for Best Traditional Blues Recording, and the other for Best Collaboration, Van Morrison and John Lee Hooker. He has played for President Clinton’s first Inaugural Ball, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, numerous jazz festivals throughout the US and Europe, several tours to New Zealand with great artists like Robben Ford, Charlie Musslewhite, Duke Robillard and Bettye LaVette. Television appearances include the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Danny wrote the film score to the Scott Silver directed motion picture ‘johns’ for which he and Charles Brown composed music, and for which he composed the title song, “The Promised Land.” The movie stars David Arquette, Lukas Haas and Keith David. He keeps up a busy schedule touring and performing most recently with Tom Rigney, Barbara Morrison, Maria Muldaur and others. And he is presently teaching courses at The Jazzschool in Berkeley, California.

Glenn Walters sang lead for two sensational Bay area bands, The Hoodoo Rhythm Devils and the Zasu Pitts Memorial Orhestra. The San Francisco Examiner called his voice “as warm, furry and comforting as a mink coat. You just wanna wrap it around you.”

Bassist Dewayne Pate graduated from the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, moved North, and has since worked with a wide array of artists including Huey Lewis & The News, Box Scaggs, Maria Muldaur, ROBBEN Ford, Arturo Sandoval, and Tower of Power. Reviewer Andrew Gilbert called his album Melting Pot “an impressive array of grooves.”

"Words + Music": A Unique Blend of Folk Music Brilliance

Some might call it a song circle, but when Laurie Lewis, Don Henry, Claudia Russell, and Nina Gerber share the stage, it becomes much more than that. These four exceptionally talented folk musicians create a pop-up band experience that is nothing short of magical. They're back for their fifth annual OCA performance that is guaranteed to leave you enchanted.

Tickets are $30 GA, $25 for OCA members. Limited space - get tickets early!

Laurie Lewis: A name well-known to Bay Area audiences and beyond, Laurie is a world-renowned singer, songwriter, fiddler, guitarist, producer, and educator. Her voice, described by Linda Ronstadt as "a rare combination of grit and grace," has earned her two International Bluegrass Music Association Female Vocalist of the Year awards. With nearly 20 albums to her name, Laurie has garnered multiple Grammy nominations and won for her contribution to "True Life Blues: the Songs of Bill Monroe." Here in Words+Music, Laurie’s songwriting truly shines.

Don Henry: Don is a songwriter's songwriter, infusing humor, depth, and profound humanity into his songs. Artists like Miranda Lambert, Ray Charles, and Patti Page have recorded his works. Don's Grammy-winning song "Where've You Been" (recorded by Kathy Mattea) is a testament to his songwriting prowess. His music, often compared to Randy Newman's, delves into thought-provoking themes, making every performance an engaging experience. Don’s “day job” is playing and singing backup on tour with folk legend Tom Paxton.

Claudia Russell: The brainchild of Words+Music, Claudia’s heartfelt and humorous songs have won her accolades on both sides of the Atlantic. According to Britain’s Country Music People UK, “Few singers can construct a song as well as Claudia Russell, and her sharp, well-observed lyrics have an engaging, timeless feel.” American Songwriter hailed her 2013 CD, “All Our Luck Is Changing,” as “a masterpiece,” and Sing Out magazine called her “an outstanding talent in the crowded field of singer/songwriters.” Boston’s WUMB-FM named Russell Artist of the Year, and the East Bay Express selected her as Best Musician.

Nina Gerber: Adding her virtuoso guitar skills to the mix, Nina Gerber is one of the West Coast's most sought-after guitarists. Her intuitive style and ability to blend seamlessly with a range of artists have made her a favorite collaborator. She's played with a wealth of renowned artists, including Chris Webster, Karla Bonoff, Nanci Griffith, Dave Alvin, Kate Wolf, and many others. Her album "Good Music with Good People" showcases her exceptional talent alongside Jackson Browne, Eliza Gilkyson, Bruce Cockburn, and more.

This extra-special evening promises savvy songwriting, superior singing, and beautiful accompaniment. Don't miss your chance to witness the enchanting collaboration of Laurie Lewis, Don Henry, Claudia Russell, and Nina Gerber. Join us on January 21 for an unforgettable Words + Music experience.
